Tallahassee, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) celebrate national Hire a Veteran Day by encouraging Florida businesses to recruit and employ veterans. Florida businesses can benefit from the education, leadership experience and dedication veterans have cultivated in their military service.

“We’re proud to celebrate Hire a Veteran Day in Florida as we continue on our mission to be the most veteran-friendly state in the nation,” said Governor DeSantis. “I recognize the important role these brave men and women hold in our communities and will continue to encourage businesses to recruit veterans. The dedication and value they bring to Florida’s economy is vital to the success of our businesses and the diversity of our workforce.”

To support veteran employment, DEO directly administers the Jobs for Veterans State Grant and works with local workforce development boards throughout the state, which are staffed with veterans’ employment representatives who are dedicated to helping veterans find meaningful employment. In 2019, nearly 4,000 veterans gained employment after assistance by the CareerSource Florida network.

“Governor DeSantis and I both proudly served our country where we obtained valuable skills needed to serve Floridians,” said Ken Lawson, Executive Director of DEO. “Hire a Veteran Day highlights the unique skills veterans can bring to a business. Every company can benefit from having talented, well-trained veterans on their staff.”

DEO also offers Employ Florida Vets, an online job portal, to assist veterans and their families with accomplishing their employment goals by providing information, resource links and job opportunities. Employers can use the portal to post available jobs, access information about hiring a veteran and learn if their business qualifies for local, state or federal tax incentives.

“The CareerSource Florida network is honored to serve the men and women who have served our country in their transition to civilian employment,” said Michelle Dennard, President and CEO of CareerSource Florida. “As workforce developers, we applaud Governor DeSantis for recognizing Hire a Veteran Day and the contributions veterans make to Florida’s economy through the advanced skills, teamwork and commitment they provide their employers.”
